Where sewer ends and septic begins

Inside the City of Florence, most homes are on city sewer. The city's Utilities Department runs the lines to the Florence Water Reclamation Facility. Once you get past the city limits, septic is common. That includes homes on the roads out toward Timmonsville and Quinby, around Mars Bluff on the west side of the Great Pee Dee, south toward Effingham and Pamplico, and in the farm country between Darlington and Hartsville. Florence County sits between the Great Pee Dee and Lynches rivers, and Darlington County lies to the northwest, so a short drive from the I-95/I-20 interchange can take you from a sewer bill to a septic tank. A quick check: if your water bill has no sewer line on it, or you are on a well, you almost certainly have a tank.

Why septic care matters in the Pee Dee

Pee Dee soils range from well-drained sandy farmland to flats that stay wet half the year. The Rains soil series, a poorly drained soil whose water table can sit within a foot of the surface from December to April, was first described from a site just northeast of Timmonsville. Woods Bay State Park near Olanta preserves some of the last large Carolina bays, the oval wetlands that dot this part of the coastal plain. Wet ground like that is hard on a drain field. The county has also been through repeated river flooding: the October 2015 rains, Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Florence in 2018, when Florence County saw what the state climatology office called its third 100-year rainfall event since 2015. A drain field that is already struggling, or a tank that is overdue for pumping, is most likely to back up when the ground is wet. Our page on septic permits, soils and flooding in Florence County covers the local details.

How it works

  1. Call (843) 960-3805. Tell us what is happening: routine pumping, an inspection, a slow drain or a backup.

  4. You decide. There is no obligation to hire anyone.

What septic work typically costs

As typical national-guide ranges, routine pumping often runs roughly $290 to $560, an inspection roughly $100 to $900, and drain field repair or replacement roughly $2,000 to $20,000. Our septic cost guide covers more. A written quote from a local provider is the only number that counts.

Before you hire anyone

South Carolina's septic program is run by the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), which took over from the former DHEC in July 2024. SCDES licenses septic installers and septic pumper/haulers. Ask any provider for their SCDES license, and ask whether your job needs a permit.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I pump my septic tank?

Typical national-guide ranges run roughly $290 to $560 for an average household tank. Buried lids, large tanks and after-hours calls cost more.

Do septic providers need a license in South Carolina?

Yes. SCDES licenses septic installers and septic pumper/haulers. Ask any provider for their license.

What should I do if sewage backs up into my house?

Stop using water, keep people and pets away, check whether a pump breaker tripped, and call for help. See our emergency page for more.
